Chris Jesty’s panoramas

My copy of Jesty’s 1976 colourful original design panorama from Snowdon covering one sheet at a scale of 125mm to one radian. Jesty also offered larger separate views of the north, east, west and south prospects from the summit. Chris Jesty originally lived in Dolgellau where the colour panoramas were made. These were printed by Cook, Hammond and Kell of Mitcham, London and of a more superior finish. He later moved to Bridport in Dorset where the editions of 1980 or later were made. This also explains the number of books he wrote on that splendid English County.

The printers for his panoramas this time were Prontaprint at Northgate St, Chester. The change to a cheaper printer explains the discontinuation of colour on his panoramas and their less superior finish. The later editions however were supplied in plastic sleeves. Chris Jesty now lives in Kendal.Jesty’s panoramas included: Snowdon, the Glyders, Great Orme, Marquis of Anglesey’s Column, Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis, Snaefell, Glastonbury Tor and Arthurs Seat. The panorama from Scafell Pike had illustrations by the noted Lakelands mountaineer Alfred Wainwright. This led to an agreement that Jesty could produce reworkings of Wainwright’s famous Lakelands guides, a work he began in 1989 and which is still underway.

Chris Jesty has a number of books to his credit. Perhaps the most famous are of course the re-issues of Alfred Wainwright’s noted Lake District guides. More information can be found in this article at the Guardian. Jesty has also written guides to places other than mountains. These include East Anglian Town Trails; A Guide to the Isle of Purbeck; Exploring Dorset by Car; and A Coast To Coast Walk (his most recent work published 2010)
