Old Paintings of Snowdonia – 1

A selection of old views & paintings

wilson

Perhaps my favourite of the old Snowdon paintings is this romantic work by Richard Wilson. It was done in 1765 and shows the classical view of the peak from the Nantlle valley. Two men are fishing in the lake while a woman walks past. The hills on either side of the lake form a focus round to the Snowdon massif. The peak is depcited rather higher than it is in reality, but the familar shape is there however. A large sized version of Wilson’s painting can be downloaded via the link link to pic

Caernarvonshire was one of the old English named counties in Wales. Local government reorganisation in the 1970’s saw many of the the counties scrapped, and larger ones were introduced. Gwynedd replaced both Caernarvonshire and Merionethshire. This painting is a view of Llyn Padarn, Padarn Castle and Snowdon seen through the clouds. It was drawn by William Walker in 1779 and the title is Snowdon in Caernarvonshire link to pic
